Engage Kid Minds At These 2 Children’s Museums in Springfield, IL

I see you struggling to find something that keeps your kids entertained, engaged, and not glued to a screen. Let’s be honest, as parents, we’re constantly juggling busy schedules all while trying to create meaningful experiences for our kids, and that’s not always easy. This is where a children’s museum steps in to save the day! With workshops, rotating exhibits, and seasonal events, every visit brings something new to explore. As a Springfield family photographer, I love seeing families enjoy special moments together. Here are some children’s museums in Springfield, IL that are fun even for mom and dad.

Why Visit Children’s Museums in Springfield, IL?

Step into a world made for little explorers, where curiosity leads the way and every corner sparks imagination and laughter. At a children’s museum, play becomes discovery in a safe place where kids can get messy, loud, and totally absorbed. All while you actually get a moment to breathe. Every exhibit invites creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on learning, from science experiments to art projects.

Mary Ann MacLean Play Museum

502 S. Spring St. Springfield, Illinois 62706

The Mary Ann MacLean Play Museum has been a beloved part of the Illinois State Museum in Springfield since it opened in 2011, replacing an earlier children’s discovery area and offering even more hands-on, play-based experiences. Here, children do so much more than look at displays. They get to dig for fossils, study insects under microscopes, piece together life-size skeletons, and even step into the role of museum curators. What makes the Play Museum especially great for families is how it blends education with excitement.  Kids gain confidence as they experiment, figure things out, and learn to share and cooperate with others. Parents sometimes get to join in on the fun as well!  It’s a place where children spark their imagination, explore new interests, and create memories that last long after they leave.

Kidzeum

412 E Adams St, Springfield, IL 62701

The Kidzeum of Health and Science has deep roots in the Springfield community. It began in the early 1990s as the original Springfield Children’s Museum, and in 2008, community members came together to create the Kidzeum, opening the doors in 2018. Since then, it’s become a hands-on playground where kids can explore how their bodies work, experiment with water, soil, and weather. As well as role-play as scientists, doctors, or community helpers. Every exhibit is designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving–turning learning into exciting play that keeps kids engaged and asking questions. All with the goal to help spark a love of learning and exploration.
